PORTLAND- Linwood E. Wilkes, 77, passed at the Portland VA Hospital,
Oregon on January 10, 2021. He was born on July 26, 1943 in Snow Hill, North
Carolina, the son of Leon and Pennie Ruth (Moye) Wilkes.
Linwood graduated from Greene County Training School in 1961. He
honorably served in the military from 1964-1984. He fought in Vietnam and
earned the rank of Sargent First Class, and a Purple Heart. He continued to serve
the military as a Civil Servant for the Coast Guard in Seattle, WA.
Linwood married Young Byun on August 5, 1978 in Bayonne, New Jersey.
They recently celebrated 42 years together.
Linwood was fond of fishing and loved to spend time talking with his cousins
and other family members. After retiring, Linwood developed a great skill for
wood carving. He spent much of his time crafting canes and other carvings to
donate to people in need. Travelling also gave Linwood great pleasure. Linwood
and Young recently moved to Vancouver, WA to be close to family. He loved his
family very much. He never missed a family reunion and was always the one who
came the farthest away. He was a family man who loved his roots.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his three sisters, Jessie Belle
Hall, Bettie Pearl Teague, and Doris Marie Wilkes.
He is survived by his wife Young; his son Jeffrey Mark Wilkes (Amanda); two
granddaughters, Bailey Ruth and Samantha Su; sons, Linwood Earl Wilkes Jr.
Wilson, NC, Antonio Dontel Hall (MyungJa), Upper Marlboro, Maryland and
Charles Artis (Tameko) Greenville, NC , one daughter Felecia Wilkes Curry
(Bobby), Raleigh, NC, his nephew Marlowe Gilmore (Beth, Marlowe Jr.), Kent,
WA ; his niece Wanda Edwards (Saint Paul, Little Paul, Jenny, Shannon Farmville,
NC ), 14 grandchildren and 11 greatgrandchildren, 2 nieces, and 4 nephews and
many cousins.
